Dagging the Sheep

Today we went to help on our grandparents sheep farm.  When we arrived Grandad and his friend Geoff and Harry and their dogs, Slab, Joy and Joy (yes 2 dogs are called Joy) were bringing the sheep out of their paddocks and into the lane that takes them up into the yards.

In the next couple of weeks the shearers will be arriving to shear all of the sheep.  The sheep need to be dagged before they arrive.  To dagg means to remove the stained and dirty wool from around their bums so it doesn't dirty the wool and it can be sold.

In this flock of sheep are two of our lambs from last year  They are still very friendly and love to be touched.

These sheep are hoggets which are two year olds they will be sold and Grandad will buy lambs (one year olds) and sell them as hoggets.

There are some really fantastic photographs in this slideshow and I really enjoyed that you mixed some video in with the images. I was interested that the post was called 'Dagging the Sheep' but you didn't write about that in your words. How can you Grandad tell the two Joy's apart? Also I was wondering if you were able to recognise your Lamb from last year and if it recognised you?

    1. Hi Mr Webb
One of the Joy's belong to grandad and one belongs to Geoff. Geoff's dog has a black face and they sound different when they bark. With working sheep dogs they only respond to their masters. We could tell the old pet lambs apart as they havent got any ear brandings and they dont run away from us. They came up to us when we were standing there.
